Established in 1960, the family's rice mill processed paddy for the local agricultural community. The Guan Teik name remains a symbol of family heritage despite the evolution of the business.
The family established Kilang Beras Guan Teik in Alor Janggus, Kedah, serving surrounding farmers and families by processing harvested paddy into rice. The mill laid the foundation of the Guan Teik legacy.
On 13 December 1983, a devastating fire destroyed the rice mill and the family's home. Datuk Tan Cheng Yam, then 23, faced the challenge of rebuilding with limited resources and help from the community.
Datuk Tan Cheng Yam founded Guan Teik Enterprise in Jitra, Kedah, focusing on gold trading and licensed moneylending. He retained the Guan Teik name to honour the former rice mill.
A private limited company structure supported expansion to six branches across northern Malaysia, including Jitra, Alor Setar, Gurun, Kuala Kerang, Kangar and Sungai Petani.
Datuk Tan Cheng Yam was recognised at the Golden Bull Award 2010, an important milestone after the family's experience of rebuilding from the 1983 fire.
Gordon Tan Eng Hwa, son of Datuk Tan Cheng Yam, returned to work with his father. Their collaboration brought together decades of entrepreneurial experience with professional management, digitalisation and growth.
Guan Teik strengthened operational processes, introduced the LoanMaster management system and expanded into additional towns, including Changlun, Arau, Pokok Sena, Langkawi, Kulim and Kuala Perlis.
The network reached 16 branches, alongside continued development of the group's brand identity and trademarks.
Building on its experience in gold-backed financial services, the business expanded into Ar-Rahnu Islamic pawnbroking and pioneered convenient drive-thru service concepts, alongside digital and operational improvements.
First generation: the rice mill pioneers. Second generation: Datuk Tan Cheng Yam, who rebuilt the family enterprise. Third generation: Gordon Tan Eng Hwa, who joined in 2011 and drove modernisation. Today, Datuk Tan Cheng Yam serves as Chairman and Gordon Tan Eng Hwa as Chief Executive Officer.
Guan Teik is more than a business name. It represents a family legacy built through perseverance, sacrifice and determination.
